Daisy Aschehoug: “How Materials Influence Design”
June 10 9:30 am, Trappe Firehouse
I'm Daisy Aschehoug, and I'm an American living in Nesodden, Norway.
I've been designing quilts for magazines since 2016, and most of those quilts incorporate some element of curved piecing into a modern traditional design aesthetic. In 2020, I published my first book with co-author Heather Black, Quilt Modern Curves and Bold Stripes. My second book, Quilting with Curves, was published in summer 2023.
I have a masters in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana, and I spent several years in the United States helping federal and state governments work with communities to develop best practices for managing natural resources. Now that I am fully immersed in designing, making, and teaching the art of quilting, I'm excited to explore how the resources I use in my craft can reflect socially and environmentally sustainable practices. And I'm always looking to share the joy of quilting with a diverse audience.
Part trunk show, part slide show, and part story hour, this lecture contains my life history for the past decade and a half in quilting. I share details on my design inspiration, a walk-through of my digital design process, and describe the how and why of the most important moments in my quilt career - good and bad. You'll also get sneak peeks at current projects that I'm not posting on social media. It's a fun hour full of stories and colorful quilts.

Tara Miller, "Modern Before Modern"
July 8, 9:30 am, Trappe Firehouse

What comes to mind when you think of Modern Quilts? In this lecture, we’ll take a fresh look at unexpected modernism in quilts made long before the Modern Quilt Movement began. From the early 1800s through the 1980s, we’ll explore quilts that echo many of the design elements we now associate with the modern aesthetic. This conversation invites us to uncover the deep roots of our collective quilting journey—and to swoon over some tantalizingly modern antique quilts along the way

Workshop with Tara Miller

Gentle curves, bold blocks, and endless possibilities.
The curved seams in Legacy Wheel are soft, approachable, and perfect for anyone new to curved piecing. If you’re already comfortable with curves, you’ll love how smoothly these blocks come together—no stress, just rhythm and flow. Each block finishes at a striking 24 inches, so you can create a statement-size quilt in surprisingly little time. In the Mixing Prints Masterclass portion, you’ll learn how to move beyond the “matching” mindset and start combining fabrics from different designers, collections, and eras with ease. We’ll explore how to mix color, scale, and motif in ways that feel intentional, personal, and just a bit daring. You’ll never look at fabric the same way again! This workshop blends construction and design work. Students practice accurate piecing techniques while also developing a clearer approach to fabric selection and print mixing. Together, these skills create a strong foundation for expressive, confident quiltmaking. |
